🇳🇱 Drone rules in Netherlands

Register once as an operator with the RDW (unless your drone is both under 250 g and has no camera), pass the EASA A1/A3 online exam, keep below 120 m and in sight, and avoid the many Dutch no-fly zones shown on the GoDrone map — all under the EU/EASA Open-category framework.

Before you fly: drone rules change and vary by location. This page is a general summary, not legal advice. Confirm the current rules with the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT) (official site). You are responsible for flying legally and safely.
Do I need to register my drone?
Register as an operator with the RDW and display the operator number on your drones. You're exempt only if the drone is both under 250 g and has no camera (CE-marked toys are also exempt). The operator ID is valid EU-wide.
Do I need a licence or test?
For drones over 250 g, complete training and pass the online theory exam at a recognised Dutch flight school, then get the certificate from the RDW: A1/A3 (basic) or an additional A2 to fly closer to people. Certificates are valid across the EU; minimum age is 16.
Is Remote ID required?
Yes for class-marked drones (C1, C2, C3), which broadcast the operator ID and the pilot's position. A class (Cx) label must be visible on Open-category drones.
What is the maximum altitude?
120 m (about 400 ft) above the ground in the Open category, and you must keep the drone within visual line of sight. Lower limits apply on designated military low-flying routes.
Where can't I fly?
Check the official GoDrone map before every flight — the Netherlands has dense controlled airspace and many no-fly areas. Flying near airports (Schiphol has large restrictions), military sites, government buildings, over crowds and events, busy roads and railways, some Natura 2000 nature areas, ports and other sensitive sites is prohibited or pushes you into the Specific category.
