🇨🇦 Drone rules in Canada
Register and mark drones from 250 g to 25 kg, hold a Basic or Advanced pilot certificate, stay at or below 122 m, and keep clear of airports and aerodromes.
Before you fly: drone rules change and vary by location. This page is a general summary, not legal advice. Confirm the current rules with the Transport Canada (official site). You are responsible for flying legally and safely.
Do I need to register my drone?
Yes if your drone weighs 250 g up to 25 kg. You must register it with Transport Canada and mark it with its registration number before flying.
Do I need a licence or test?
For drones 250 g to 25 kg you need a Pilot Certificate. A Basic certificate (online exam) covers basic operations; an Advanced certificate (online exam plus an in-person flight review) is needed for operations such as flying in controlled airspace or closer to people.
Is Remote ID required?
Transport Canada has been phasing in Remote ID requirements. Check the current Transport Canada rules for whether your operation and drone must broadcast Remote ID.
What is the maximum altitude?
122 m (400 ft) above ground level, unless otherwise authorised.
Where can't I fly?
Near airports, heliports and aerodromes, in controlled airspace without an Advanced certificate and authorisation, over or near emergencies and advertised events, and you must keep the drone within visual line of sight.
