🇮🇪 Drone rules in Ireland

Register as a drone operator with the IAA and pass the free online test before flying most drones, then keep below 120 m, follow the EASA distance-from-people rules, and check the UAS Geographic Zones map before flying near airports or other restricted areas — all under the common EU/EASA framework.

Before you fly: drone rules change and vary by location. This page is a general summary, not legal advice. Confirm the current rules with the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) (official site). You are responsible for flying legally and safely.
Do I need to register my drone?
Yes — register as a UAS operator with the IAA (via the MySRS portal) if your drone is over 250 g or has a camera/sensor and isn't a toy. You register once as the operator; the number goes on the drone and its Remote ID, and is valid 2 years. An operator ID from another EU country is recognised.
Do I need a licence or test?
For Open-category A1/A3 you complete the free online training and test on MySRS (certificate valid 5 years). Flying in subcategory A2 or the Specific category needs the additional Remote Pilot Competency Certificate.
Is Remote ID required?
Yes. Under the EASA framework, drones (except toys) must carry Direct Remote ID; class-marked drones broadcast the operator/serial number, position, height and take-off location.
What is the maximum altitude?
120 m (400 ft) above ground level, the standard EASA Open-category limit.
Where can't I fly?
Check the IAA's UAS Geographic Zones map and get authorisation before flying in any restricted or controlled zone — these cover airports and aerodromes, controlled airspace, and sites such as hospitals, prisons and military barracks. Never fly over assemblies of people, keep the drone within visual line of sight, and respect your subcategory's distance from uninvolved people (A2 at least 30 m; A3 at least 150 m from residential, commercial, industrial or recreational areas).
