🇮🇹 Drone rules in Italy

Italy follows the EU/EASA Open-category rules — register as an operator on ENAC's d-flight platform, carry the EASA pilot competency and third-party insurance, keep below 120 m, and check the d-flight map for Italian geo-zones before every flight.

Before you fly: drone rules change and vary by location. This page is a general summary, not legal advice. Confirm the current rules with the Ente Nazionale per l'Aviazione Civile (ENAC) (official site). You are responsible for flying legally and safely.
Do I need to register my drone?
Register as an operator on ENAC's d-flight platform if your drone is 250 g or more, or is lighter but has a camera/sensor and isn't a toy. You get an EU-wide operator ID, issued in Italy as a QR code that must be affixed to the drone. Third-party liability insurance is required.
Do I need a licence or test?
Yes — the EASA A1/A3 online training and exam (via ENAC/d-flight) for any drone 250 g or more; flying closer to people (A2) needs an additional proctored exam and a competency certificate valid 5 years. Minimum age is 16. Sub-250 g drones (even with a camera) need no certificate.
Is Remote ID required?
Yes for class-marked drones (C1, C2, C3), which must have direct Remote ID — the standard EASA requirement applied in Italy.
What is the maximum altitude?
120 m (about 400 ft) above the ground in the Open category. Lower local limits apply inside d-flight geo-zones.
Where can't I fly?
Check the d-flight map before every flight — a restriction is binding when it appears there. Open-category flying is prohibited in airport safety zones, over assemblies of people, and in national parks and protected areas without authorisation. Flying over monuments, archaeological sites and historic city centres (Rome, Venice, Florence) is restricted under cultural-heritage and local rules, so check with the local authority too.
