🇲🇽 Drone rules in Mexico

Recreational drones over 250 g need a free registry folio from AFAC (no pilot licence for micro drones up to 2 kg); fly below 122 m (400 ft), in daylight, within visual line of sight, away from people, and at least 9.2 km from any airport. The governing rule is NOM-107-SCT3-2019.

Before you fly: drone rules change and vary by location. This page is a general summary, not legal advice. Confirm the current rules with the Agencia Federal de Aviación Civil (AFAC) (official site). You are responsible for flying legally and safely.
Do I need to register my drone?
Yes if it weighs over 250 g — recreational drones need a free registry folio from AFAC's Registro Aeronáutico Mexicano. Drones of 250 g or less are exempt. A minor may fly if an adult registers as the operator.
Do I need a licence or test?
No licence or test for recreational micro drones (up to 2 kg) — only the folio and the general operating rules apply. Private or commercial operations, heavier drones (2–25 kg and above), and night flying need an AFAC authorisation; drones over 25 kg require a pilot licence.
Is Remote ID required?
There is no broadcast Remote ID requirement. Recreational drones over 250 g must, however, carry geofencing software that limits altitude and distance, plus a serial number.
What is the maximum altitude?
122 m (400 ft) above ground level, reduced to 100 m when flying between 9.2 km and 18.5 km of a listed aerodrome. Maximum horizontal distance from the pilot is 457 m.
Where can't I fly?
Stay at least 9.2 km (5 nautical miles) from any aerodrome and 0.9 km from any heliport, and out of prohibited, restricted or danger zones (check NOTAMs). Don't fly over people who aren't part of the operation, and fly only in daylight within visual line of sight, one drone at a time.
